The Complete Guide to Caring for Fresh Flowers After Home Delivery.

By Bring My Flowers  |  Flower Care Guide

Fresh flowers are one of life's small but genuine luxuries. Whether you received them as a gift or ordered them for yourself, there is something about having blooms in the house that lifts the entire mood of a room. But flowers are also delicate, and the difference between an arrangement that fades in two days and one that lasts two weeks often comes down to a handful of simple habits.
After years of delivering flowers across Delhi NCR and Gurgaon, we have seen it all — and we know exactly what works. This is the guide we wish every customer received with their order.

Here's our complete care guide for fresh flowers after home delivery.
Step 1: Act Quickly After Delivery
As soon as your flowers arrive, get them into water. The longer they sit without water, the more stressed they become. If you can't attend to them immediately, at least keep them in a cool, shaded spot.

Step 2: Trim the Stems — Always
This is the single most important thing you can do. Cut 2–3 cm off each stem at a 45° angle using sharp scissors or a clean knife.
  • The diagonal cut creates a larger surface area for water absorption
  • Trim in water or under running water to prevent air locks in the stem
  • Re-trim every time you change the water
Step 3: Set Up a Clean Vase
Bacteria in dirty vases are a silent flower killer. Before using any vase, wash it properly with soap and rinse thoroughly. Fill it with fresh, room-temperature water.
  • Flower food packets: Use them! They contain sugar (energy for the flower), an acidifier (helps water travel up the stem), and a biocide (kills bacteria).
Step 4: Strip Leaves Below the Waterline
Leaves submerged in water decompose fast and create a breeding ground for bacteria. Before arranging your flowers, remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline.

Step 5: Place Them in the Right Environment
Where you keep your flowers matters a lot. Here's what to avoid:
  • Direct sunlight: Speeds up wilting
  • Air conditioner or fan: Dries flowers out quickly
  • Fruits nearby: They emit ethylene gas, which ages flowers faster
  • Near stoves or heaters: Heat = faster wilting
Ideal spot: a cool room with indirect light. Your dining table or a well-lit hallway usually works perfectly.

Step 6: Change Water Every 2 Days
This is simple but makes a huge difference. Empty the vase, rinse it, refill with fresh water, and re-trim the stems by a centimetre. This keeps bacteria levels low and ensures your flowers stay hydrated.

Step 7: Different Flowers, Different Needs
Not all flowers are the same. Here are a few flower-specific tips:
  • Roses: Love cool water and are thirstier than they look. Check the water level daily, remove thorns carefully to prevent bacterial entry, and re-trim the stems every day for the longest vase life.
  • Sunflowers: Heavy drinkers that can drain a vase faster than you expect. Check water levels daily, re-trim every two days, and keep them in a bright spot away from direct heat.
  • Lilies: Need a little extra attention as they open. Remove the pollen stamens before the blooms fully open to avoid staining your fabrics or surfaces. Re-trim and change water every two days, and keep them away from pets  lilies are toxic to cats.
  • Orchids: Arrive with small plastic vials at the base of each stem. These are only to keep them hydrated during transit. Remove the vials at home, place the stems in fresh water, and lightly mist the blooms daily to keep them looking their best.
  • Tulips: Unique in that they continue to grow even after being cut. Keep them in a cool room, change the water frequently, and rotate the vases occasionally so they stay upright and even.
  • Carnations: Among the longest-lasting cut flowers you can get. Trim the stems between the nodes, the little joints along the stem. Change the water every two days, and they can easily last two weeks or more.
  • Tuberoses (Rajnigandha): Do best in shallow water in a cool, shaded spot. Keep them away from direct sunlight, which fades the blooms quickly. Their fragrance peaks in the evening, making them perfect for a bedroom or living room. Can we add a line saying- these bloom and wither from bottom to top- the bottom ones when dry can be pulled out
  • Gerberas:  Refresh the water daily. Re-trim every two days and place them in bright, indirect light, and they will stay vibrant and perky.
And regardless of the variety, all flowers benefit from a gentle daily mist. A light spritz of cool water over the petals keeps them from drying out and adds an instant freshness — it takes ten seconds and makes a visible difference.

Step 8: Refresh Wilting Flowers
If your flowers start to look tired before their time, try this:
  • Re-cut the stems at a fresh angle
  • Submerge the entire flower (bloom and all) in a bucket of cool water for 30 minutes
  • Move them to a cooler room
This often revives drooping blooms dramatically — especially roses.

Quick Reference: Do's & Don'ts
  • DO: Trim stems at 45°, change water every 2 days, use flower food, keep in a cool bright spot
  • DON'T: Place near fruits, direct sun, or heaters — and never put leaves in water
At Bring My Flowers, every arrangement is packed with care to reach you looking its best. A little attention at home goes a long way in preserving that freshness.
